Osu entomology program

The Department of Entomology currently has 17 faculty working in diverse entomological fields including vector biology, pollinator management and conservation, crop pest management, molecular biology, insect behavior and other specialties.

Additionally, faculty in our department are encouraged to participate in the Sustainable Agriculture undergraduate major, a Master of Plant Health Management, and Environmental Sciences Graduate Program.

Wooster offers excellent schools, affordable cost of living and convenient access to the cities of Akron, Cleveland, and Columbus. The Ohio State University is committed to establishing a culturally and intellectually diverse environment and encouraging all members of our learning community to reach their full potential.

We are responsive to dual-career families and strongly promote work-life balance to support our community members through a suite of institutionalized policies.

More events. About the same. Much of the research conducted in this department, from pest management to molecular entomology, is driven by an ecological paradigm of production efficiency, economic viability, social responsibility and environmental protection. Individual and collaborative research programs are further synergized by a breadth of experience and operations along diverse continua: from traditional problem solvers to designers and leaders, from basic to applied science, across two campuses and beyond into medicine and human health, from the molecule to ecosystem levels, from local to global issues, and from heuristic science to intellectual property.

The unique ability to operate along the full scope of these axes provides a great deal of flexibility in the education we provide and in the potential for developing solutions and opportunities for the future. Both M. Human health, local and global economies, and sustainable food and water supplies all depend on state-of-the-art knowledge about insects, their integral roles in ecosystems and their effective management.

Pollination by honey bees and other insects ensures the availability of fruits and vegetables in our diets, and insect communities are important indicators of environmental quality and their study advances ecosystem restoration and management. While most species are beneficial, insect pests account for more human deaths than all wars combined, destroy food and fiber, and damage homes and other structures.

Every year, research-based strategies for control of insect-borne diseases save millions of lives. Interested students, newly accepted or currently enrolled at Ohio State, should contact the Department of Entomology to set up a personal meeting with a curriculum advisor to discuss career plans and goals and explore the many benefits of majoring in entomology.

Once the major is declared, each student is assigned a faculty advisor who helps with identifying a career path and assembling the most appropriate combination of required and elective courses. The entomology major couples a strong background in the biological sciences with in-depth study of insect biology and applied entomology. Students learn insect physiology, behavior, ecology and taxonomy, as well as beekeeping, veterinary and public health entomology, sustainable agriculture, and integrated pest management in agricultural, forest and urban environments.

Faculty are world-class scientists engaged in cutting edge research who also teach entomology courses. Our smaller class sizes enable instructors to provide individual attention to students. Entomology students enjoy a high degree of flexibility in shaping their program, and typically choose one of two tracks: 1 applied pest management or 2 pre-graduate, pre-medical or pre-veterinary studies.

Tracks can be customized. Entomology students have access to Insect Adventure, one of the largest interactive live arthropod exhibits in the country. OSU is one of only 16 universities in the nation with an entomology major and has the largest enrollment.

Graduates have gone on to successfully complete veterinary school, medical school, law school, graduate school, military service or have begun their own businesses.
